The Defender Land Rover Is Still Working On. Available Today.
By Douglas Topott·
Land Rover's refreshed Defender is on its way. New lighting. Reworked bumpers. A mesh grille.
This one is already here. Our Defender 90 P300 SE, remastered by Chelsea Truck Company in Porsche Paint-to-Sample (PTS) Brewster Green and Old English Tan.
The facelift, finished
The Defender is in its seventh year, and Land Rover is preparing a refresh. We got there first, and we didn't stop at the grille. This Defender 90 already wears the facelift headlights, the mesh, and a cabin Land Rover has never offered. No order book. No build slot. No wait.
Three generations, one face
The mesh grille is not a new idea. It is the original one, worn first by the Series I, the face of a working machine. When the classic Defender ran from 1991 to 2016, Chelsea Truck Company brought it back as a stainless steel mesh grille in an aluminium surround, fitted to Defenders worldwide. The L663 is the third chapter, years in the refining, surfaced in Autodesk Alias and engineered to Tier 1 OEM standards with one brief: look as though it left the factory this way.
Dressed, not modified
The car is repainted throughout in Porsche paint-to-sample Brewster Green, a modern take on the original Series I palette, deep and distinctly British. Side vents are colour-coded to match, the hard spare wheel cover finished in gloss black with the Heritage designation graphic, and it stands on 9.5x22" Mondial forged alloy wheels in satin black, one of Chelsea Truck Company's earliest and most recognised wheel designs. Forged for lightness. Satin for restraint. Nothing shouts.
The cabin Land Rover should offer
The SE specification is generous but not special, so Chelsea Truck Company made it special. The cabin is trimmed throughout in Old English Tan 3D modular leather, a quiet homage to the simplicity of the Series I cabin, covering the dashboard, door tops, armrests, transmission tunnel, centre cubbybox and steering wheel centre. Every surface you touch. Every surface you see.
Under the skin
Power comes from the 2.0 litre P300 petrol engine, 296bhp, automatic, smooth and willing in the compact 90 body. Right-hand drive, two owners. Land Rover engineering. Chelsea Truck Company character.
A word from the founder
"The Defender doesn't need reinventing. It needs remembering. Land Rover is now looking back at the mesh grille, and we're glad. We've believed in that face for years. This car is what happens when you finish the thought."
